What happens if my specimen's liquid turns yellow?
Most people get scared when they first see this, but rest assured, this is a normal occurrence that happens through a process called Osmosis! This is when the stored solution pulls any contaminants out of the specimen and can especially occur if your specimen is stored in direct sunlight. Make sure not to store your specimen in any direct lighting as this can make the liquid turn quicker over time and can damage your specimen. All of my specimens are stored in 70% isopropyl alcohol which can be found at almost any grocery or drug store!

How do you source your specimens?
I like to use the term “sustainable” when explaining how I source my specimens; All of my specimens have already passed when we meet and I do not hunt or kill any specimens for the sake of my work. My specimens are sourced from reptile breeders, rodent breeders, pet shops, roadkill and all pass from natural causes through these sources. Occasionally I will receive specimens from the FWC who euthanize invasive species, and while I don’t personally agree with these standards (everyone has their own opinion on this, and that’s totally okay <3), I believe that preserving these beautiful animals and giving them a second life through preservation is a great way to honor their life from what was once an unfortunate situation.

How do I add/top off solution in my globed specimen?
The globed specimens can be intimidating, but I promise it’s easy once you get the hang of it!
- When you need to add your solution, take the silicone plug out of the bottom and place multiple paper towels in the base so you can put your globe on top of it to keep it steady and the alcohol won’t damage the base if any leaks.
-Add your solution (70% isopropyl alcohol) up close to the rim of the globe. and press the silicone plug back into the globe.
-When the plug is fully secured in the globe, the middle of the plug may be poking outwards; This is because there is an air pocket. To remove it, pull back the rim of the silicone and gently push on the poked out silicone so any extra solution or air can escape.

How do I get into wet specimen preservation?
I’m currently in the works of creating my own wet specimen preservation course, however, there are many educational YouTube videos regarding the process! I recommend TheLittleBlackShadeTree on YouTube! She’s awesome and has a great info guide for beginners!

I received my specimen and its scales are flaking. Is this normal?
Yes! I mainly preserve reptiles and they have scales which shed through out their life. I try my best to brush off any excess scales when preserving or prior to shipping the specimen out, but through the osmosis process, the specimens are bound to experience minor flaking. You can simply replace the solution if need be! :)
